Kraków: Roof of Uninhabited Tenement Collapses. Avalanche Dogs End Search

Roof of an uninhabited tenement building collapsed in Kraków on March 15, prompting a search that ended without finding any victims.

The roof collapse occurred on Saturday, March 15, before 6 PM in a tenement building at Grzegórzecka Street 32A, near Grzegórzeckie Roundabout in Kraków.

Fire Department Statement

Press spokesperson for the Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service in Małopolska Capt. mgr Hubert Ciepły informed Gazeta.pl on Sunday after 7 AM that the operation ended at 2:10 AM.

“The dogs finished searching the rubble. No one was found,” he added in the conversation with Gazeta.pl.

Police Involvement

Firefighters continuously searched the collapse site for potential victims using elevators, according to Subcom. Iwona Szelichiewicz from the Małopolska police.

Services with avalanche dogs were sent from Nowy Sącz to Kraków, arriving after 9 PM. As of 11 PM, police reported no victims.

Building Status

The tenement building was uninhabited at the time of the collapse.

Investigation

“The reasons for the collapse are unknown and we will definitely have to wait for this information,” said Subcom. Iwona Szelichiewicz.

“The most important thing is to check if there were people there. Only later will a research team enter,” she added.

Evacuation Measures

The situation is supervised by the building inspectorate, which did not issue an evacuation order for the only inhabited building adjacent to the tenement.

The building supervision issued a recommendation for possible evacuation. Six out of 14 people left their apartments and are to be accommodated in a hotel, according to Szelichiewicz, who added that a crisis management team will take care of them.
