Kremlin Cheers European Call for Putin Dialogue

European leaders urge talks with Russia as Kremlin calls the shift in stance a ‘positive evolution.’

Europe Wants to Talk to Putin

France, Germany, and Italy have appealed for the resumption of talks with Russia regarding Ukraine. “I believe the time has come for Europe to also talk with Russia. If Europe only talks with one side on the battlefield, I fear its contribution will be limited,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Kremlin’s “Positive Evolution” Response

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the European leaders’ appeals a “positive evolution.” “Moscow has noted the statements made in recent days by several European leaders, namely from Paris, Rome, and even Berlin, although it may seem strange that to ensure stability in Europe, they must talk with Russians,” said Peskov. “This is fully in line with our vision. If this truly reflects the strategic vision of Europeans, then it is a positive evolution of their positions.”

Kremlin Criticizes UK Position

Kremlin spokesman also commented on the United Kingdom’s position. London is skeptical about talking with Russia. “I think we need evidence that Putin really wants peace, but I still don’t see it. I think we need to be ready to exert increasing pressure alongside this very important work—economic pressure, and also through military support for Ukraine, to exert this military pressure on Russia as well,” said UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. Dmitry Peskov stated that “London’s position remains destructive.”
