Kremlin Condemns Polish Judiciary, Pledges Support for Russian Archaeologist

The Kremlin criticized a Polish court’s decision to approve the extradition of Russian archaeologist Aleksandr Butiagin to Ukraine on Thursday.

Kremlin Reacts to Archeologist’s Arrest and Extradition

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian authorities will do everything possible to assist Russian archaeologist Aleksandr Butiagin, who was arrested in Poland, according to Reuters.

The Warsaw District Court agreed on Wednesday to extradite the archaeologist to Ukraine.

Court Decision and Russian Response

Peskov described the Polish court as “pro-Ukrainian” in comments to journalists, referring to the court’s decision to allow Butiagin’s extradition to Ukraine. He added that Russian authorities would act to protect the archaeologist’s “legitimate interests.”

Ukrainian Charges Against Butiagin

The Warsaw District Court determined on Wednesday that the extradition of Russian archaeologist Aleksandr Butiagin to Ukrainian authorities was legally permissible.

Ukrainian investigators suspect him of partially destroying a cultural heritage site in occupied Crimea, with damages estimated at over 200 million hryvnias.

Arrest and Initial Proceedings

Butiagin was detained by the Internal Security Agency in early December of last year at the request of the Ukrainian justice system.

He was questioned by the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office, where he refused to provide explanations. He was subsequently arrested by court order.
