Land‑Sale Scandal Shakes PiS, Exposes Broken Stewardship Narrative

A covert sale of 160 hectares of land earmarked for the Central Communication Port has surfaced, eroding the ruling Law and Justice party’s image and igniting political backlash across Poland.

Broken Narrative of Stewardship

Professor Robert Szwed points out that the revelation that the land was sold secretly contradicts PiS’s claim of acting decisively. The project had been a flagship of the party’s agenda, and the inefficient handling now undercuts its credibility.

Simple Scandal, No Strategy

Experts stress that the CPK controversy is straightforward compared to deeper economic scandals, yet for PiS it is particularly damaging. The land was sold just before the party’s tenure ended, and its value surged immediately afterward, raising questions about prudent use of state assets.

Who Wins, Who Loses?

According to Szwed, all parties suffer: PiS, its governing coalition, and the public lose trust. The scandal forces the government to buy back the plot, potentially through eminent domain, incurring significant financial losses.

Scandal Over Land for CPK Construction

WP reported that the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Robert Telus, approved the sale of the land to Dawton’s vice‑president, a move made just before PiS’s term ended. The parcel, originally owned by the National Agricultural Support Centre, was crucial for the CPK project.

Experts Warn of Tactical Damage Control

Professor Szwed notes that suspended MPs may serve as a limited‑risk strategy aimed at mitigating reputational damage. However, the presence of high‑ranking officials such as a former minister suggests that the party cannot easily abandon key players.
