Largest Drone Assault on Moscow in Over a Year as Russia and Ukraine Exchange Hundreds of Strikes

Russia and Ukraine engaged in a massive mutual drone offensive overnight, resulting in at least three deaths near Moscow and significant civilian casualties across multiple Ukrainian regions following intense bombardment.

Escalation over Moscow

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, air defense systems intercepted and downed 556 Ukrainian drones across 14 federal subjects, Crimea, and the Black and Azov Seas. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported at least three fatalities and 12 injuries. A woman died in Khimki after a drone struck a private residence, while two others were killed in the village of Pogorelki.

Most injuries occurred near an oil refinery, though Sobyanin stated the facility’s technology remained undamaged. Debris also fell near Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia’s largest aviation hub, but authorities reported no damage or casualties there. TASS reported residential damage in Istra, noting this was the largest Ukrainian strike on the capital in more than a year.

Russian Strikes on Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 287 drones, with 279 neutralized by air defenses or electronic warfare. Strikes hit southern and eastern regions, leaving two people dead and 16 injured, including a child, in the Kherson region. In the Zaporizhzhia region, seven people were injured across 49 localities.

The Dnipropetrovsk region reported eight injuries, including three in the city of Dnipro, where private homes and a business were damaged. Attacks also struck the Kharkiv region, injuring seven, and the Mykolaiv region, where civilian infrastructure was targeted.

Context of Recent Violence

CNN noted that the drone exchanges followed a wave of Russian strikes on Kyiv earlier in the week that killed at least 25 people, including three children, when a Kh-101 missile hit an apartment block. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Friday that Ukraine reserves the right to strike Russian military and energy infrastructure.

Zelensky reported that over the past week, Russia used 3,170 drones, 1,300 guided bombs, and 74 missiles, resulting in 52 deaths and approximately 350 injuries. While Ukraine intercepted 94 percent of drones during the May 13-14 period, only 7 percent of missiles were successfully downed.
