On Sunday, UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced the government will remove Prince Andrew’s remaining honorary military title at the king’s request, saying the monarch aims to strip him of all honours.
No Remaining Titles for Andrew
The UK government is set to eliminate Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s last honorary military title, a move requested by King Charles III. He had already relinquished all military titles and awards in 2022, retaining only the rank of Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy.
BBC reports note that Andrew served 22 years in the Royal Navy, flew a helicopter during the Falklands War and commanded the minehunter HMS Cottesmore.
King’s Decision and Parliamentary Power
Andrew announced in mid‑October that he would no longer use his official titles, citing press reports linking him to Jeffrey Epstein and his decision to withdraw from public life five years ago.
He said the withdrawal followed consultations with Charles III and family, and, although he will still legally be Duke of York, he will not use the title. Parliament could alter this through legislation.
He has lost other inherited titles such as Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, yet the princely title remains by birthright, a convention established by George V in 1917.
Virginia Giuffre’s Allegations
Virginia Giuffre, who died in early 2023, claimed she was sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein and his associates, alleging that Prince Andrew—King Charles III’s brother—conspired in these abuses.
Giuffre testified that she was forced to have sex with Andrew three times when she was 17, including at friend Ghislaine Maxwell’s London house in 2001.
Commentary from Royal Correspondent
Royal writer and journalist Valentine Low described the king’s actions as “merciless relentlessly determined.”
