Lawyer Behind “Coffin on Wheels” Remark Arrested Following Fatal Accident

Police in the Lublin Voivodeship arrested lawyer Paweł K. on Thursday after he was found wanted under an arrest warrant regarding a fatal 2021 car collision.

The Arrest

Officers from the Search and Identification Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Łódź arrested a lawyer on Thursday, May 7, in the Hrubieszów district of the Lublin Voivodeship. The man was wanted based on an arrest warrant issued by the District Court in Olsztyn to serve an 18-month prison sentence.

According to police, Paweł K. was convinced that frequent changes in his place of residence would allow him to remain elusive, and the arrival of officers came as a complete surprise. He did not resist during the arrest.

Fatal Collision Details

The accident occurred on September 26, 2021, near Olsztyn on the Barczewo-Jeziorany route. According to the prosecution, Paweł K., driving a Mercedes, crossed a double solid line and collided with an Audi traveling correctly. Two women traveling in the Audi died at the scene.

Controversial Online Remarks

Paweł K. published a video online stating the accident was a “confrontation between a safe car and a coffin on wheels,” adding that this was why the women died. The prosecution also indicated that the lawyer had previously filmed and posted videos online showing himself and his wife exceeding speed limits.

Sentencing and Appeals

In April last year, the Olsztyn District Court sentenced Paweł K. to two years in prison and a five-year driving ban. This sentence was appealed by the defendant’s lawyers, the prosecution, and the legal representatives of the victims’ families.

The second-instance court mitigated the sentence to 18 months and a four-year driving ban, noting that Paweł K. had unintentionally violated traffic safety rules due to inattention. Under current Polish law, a sentence of up to 18 months may be served through electronic monitoring at home. In March, Paweł K.’s defense filed a request with a court in Łódź to serve the sentence via electronic monitoring; the request has not yet been considered.
