Former Polish President Lech Wałęsa and ex-Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek received the European Order of Merit in Strasbourg on Tuesday, an event boycotted by several PiS and far-right MEPs.
The Boycott Over Angela Merkel
The protest by PiS and other right-wing MEPs was triggered by the inclusion of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel among the award recipients. Critics argue that her past policy toward Russia undermined European security and indirectly facilitated the invasion of Ukraine, while the award recognized her efforts in bridging East and West.
Wałęsa Dismisses Political Stunt
During the ceremony, most PiS members declined to applaud or stand for the honorees, instead organizing a picket protesting Merkel’s presence. Notable participants included Adam Bielan, Jadwiga Wiśniewska, Piotr Mueller, and Marcin Sypniewski of the Confederation party.
Lech Wałęsa condemned the boycott as “political stupidity,” stating that the MEPs missed an opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue. He asserted that he does not require advisors and will continue to follow his own path, despite calls from Adam Bielan for the Polish honorees to reject their awards.
Disappointment in Viktor Orbán
Wałęsa also addressed his upcoming meeting with Hungarian politician Peter Magyar. Reflecting on his past support for Viktor Orbán, the former president expressed significant disappointment, noting that Orbán has failed to embrace the necessary new solutions for the future of Europe and the world.
