A lightning strike hit the Burj Khalifa in Dubai on Friday, with footage of the event widely shared on social media.
Burj Khalifa Struck by Lightning
Images and videos circulating on social media clearly show the moment lightning struck the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. The Dubai skyscraper stands at 828 meters tall, twice the height of the Empire State Building.
No Damage or Injuries Reported
No one was injured as a result of the strike, and there are no reports of any damage. Dubai authorities had earlier issued a warning about challenging weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms.
The warning also cautioned about reduced visibility due to sand carried by strong winds.
Construction and Features of the Burj Khalifa
Twelve thousand people worked on the construction of the Burj Khalifa. Opened in 2010, the building, shaped like a desert flower (Hymenocalis), has 163 floors and approximately 60 elevators, the fastest reaching a speed of 10 meters per second.
The total cost of construction was $1.5 billion. The Burj Khalifa features the world’s highest observation deck on the 148th floor (555 meters high) and an open-air terrace on the 124th floor.
