Lille to Host New EU Customs Authority; Warsaw Falls Short

Lille, France, was selected Wednesday to be the headquarters of the European Union Customs Authority (EUCA), defeating Warsaw and Rome in the final round.

Lille Chosen as EU Customs Authority Headquarters

Lille, France, has been chosen as the location for the new European Union Customs Authority (EUCA), as announced Wednesday by the Cypriot presidency in the Council of the EU.

The French city was a finalist alongside Rome, having previously surpassed Warsaw in voting.

Voting Process and Final Selection

Member states in the Council of the EU and the European Parliament jointly selected the new agency’s headquarters on Wednesday.

In the first round of voting, both institutions identified two cities that advanced to the final vote. Both the Council of the EU and the European Parliament selected Rome and Lille, with Warsaw finishing third.

Other Contending Cities

Liege (Belgium), Malaga (Spain), Zagreb (Croatia), The Hague (Netherlands), Porto (Portugal), and Bucharest (Romania) were also eliminated from consideration.

Rationale for New Agency

The creation of the EU Customs Authority is part of a broader EU customs reform, deemed necessary to address increasing pressures stemming from growing trade volumes, fragmented national systems, the rapid expansion of e-commerce, and evolving geopolitical realities. (PAP)
