Lithuania Declares State of Emergency Over Contraband Balloons; Lukashenko Flares Accusations

Lithuania introduced a state of emergency nationwide on Thursday after contraband balloons from Belarus disrupted air traffic, sparking a sharp rebuttal from Belarusian President Lukashenko.

Lukashenko on Lithuania’s Decision

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko dismissed Lithuania’s move as “impossible” and “unrealistic,” labeling it a politicized attack. He said the alleged balloon smuggling accusations were baseless and urged Belarusian pilots that the balloons posed no danger.

Lithuania Imposes State of Emergency

The government declared a nationwide state of emergency after a wave of contraband balloons from Minsk paralyzed Vilnius air traffic and disrupted operations at other airports. Minister Władysław Kondratowicz cited the need for tighter coordination between civilian and security agencies to counter what it deemed a hybrid attack by the Minsk regime.

What Is an “Extreme Situation State”?

The emergency measures are described as “targeted” and are meant to safeguard national security without limiting citizens’ rights or mobility. Borders with Poland and Latvia remain open, and the decree is framed as remedial rather than restrictive.
