Lublin Student Arrested for Planned Christmas Market Terror Attack

A 19‑year‑old student from the Catholic University of Lublin, Mateusz W., was detained on December 16 for allegedly planning a mass attack on a Christmas market.

Social Media Shows Fascination with Radical Islam

Polish media reported that Mateusz W. used an Arabic nickname and regularly posted pictures in a Muslim headscarf, as well as graphics depicting Islamic fighters. He also shared a photo of Ted Kaczynski, the American domestic terrorist. Analysis of his profile indicated a sustained interest in radical Islam for more than two years, and his posts in spring shifted dramatically to include a “jihad flag” and a photo of himself dressed as an ISIS fighter.

Arrest Made by Internal Security Agency

On Tuesday, 16 December, a spokesperson for the Minister of Internal Affairs announced that Internal Security Agency officers seized Mateusz W. The spokesperson, Jacek Dobrzyński, said the student had gathered information on how to produce homemade explosives, sought contacts to obtain such materials, and planned to join a terrorist organization for assistance.

Charges of Terrorist Preparations

The National Prosecutor’s Office charged Mateusz W. with preparing a terrorist act that could result in deaths or serious injuries. The alleged activities include collecting data on explosive materials, establishing contacts for acquisition, searching for accomplices, and seeking support for the planned attack.

Investigation Continues Under Szczecin Prosecutor’s Office

The case is being investigated by the Szczecin ABW delegation under supervision of the local Directorate of the State Prosecutor’s Office. Mateusz W. will spend approximately 60 days in custody pending further proceedings.
