Łukasz Litewka, a Polish MP and activist celebrated for mobilizing aid through social media, died April 23rd in a bicycle accident in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
A Helping Hand Lost
Łukasz Litewka was known for his unwavering willingness to help others. People were drawn to him, stopping him on the street for photos, conversations, advice, or assistance, requests he rarely refused. He spearheaded fundraising efforts, adoptions, and interventions for children, animals, and those who had exhausted other avenues for help. His death leaves a void difficult to fill.
He was a figure who connected with people on a personal level, known for his accessibility and dedication to those in need.
Dariusz’s Fight and Litewka’s Intervention
Dariusz Bednorz, a local resident, faced a dire diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor. The only hope was a complex operation costing 100,000 PLN, an amount he could not afford. He launched a fundraising campaign, but initial progress was slow, as Dariusz was reserved about sharing his suffering.
Litewka then shared Dariusz’s story on his social media, giving it a face and a voice. Within hours, the campaign went viral, with donations pouring in and the necessary funds raised in a single day.
Support for Wojtuś’s Family
The parents of Wojtuś, a six-year-old battling cancer, also found support in Litewka. He actively participated in fundraising for Wojtuś, visited the family, and provided ongoing support through his foundation. After Wojtuś’s death, Litewka continued to offer comfort to the grieving parents.
Litewka’s Political Rise and Methods
Łukasz Litewka’s strength stemmed from years of direct engagement with people, fundraising, and unwavering commitment. He was known as both a member of parliament and “Zrzutkoman” – the fundraising man – capable of sparking massive online support. He didn’t limit himself to appeals; he connected people, verified needs, and organized assistance for families, children with disabilities, and those in crisis.
Katarzyna Kotula emphasized that Litewka used social media as a voice for those in need, prioritizing concrete action over traditional politics. He quickly mobilized support for individuals needing housing, employment, or other assistance.
Litewka understood the emotional language of the internet, using it as a tool to achieve tangible results: funds for treatment, food for animals, adoptions, and increased awareness of neglected causes. His profiles functioned as rescue boards, attracting people who saw real outcomes.
From Local Councilor to Parliamentarian
Born in 1989 in Sosnowiec, Łukasz Litewka studied sociology at the University of Silesia. Before entering parliament, he served as a local councilor in Sosnowiec in 2014 and 2018. In 2019, he ran for parliament on the SLD list but was unsuccessful. In 2023, he secured a seat in the Sejm from the last position on the New Left list, receiving 40,579 votes.
His success was seen as a signal of a new type of politician, less tied to party structures and more connected to local recognition and direct engagement with the public. His campaign notably featured posters promoting dogs for adoption, demonstrating his commitment to using his platform for social good.
Animal Welfare and Cross-Party Collaboration
In recent years, Litewka’s “Zwierzogranie” (Animal Game) project focused on animal homelessness, education, and support for shelters. He envisioned a world where animal welfare was a priority, and the project aimed to unite people around this cause.
He actively worked on animal protection issues in parliament, collaborating with figures like Dorota Rabczewska to raise awareness about private shelters and advocate for systemic changes. He even met with President Karol Nawrocki to discuss potential improvements to animal welfare regulations, demonstrating a willingness to engage with political opponents for the sake of a common goal.
The Accident and Investigation
The tragedy occurred on April 23, 2026, on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Litewka was struck by a car that reportedly swerved into his lane while riding his bicycle. Despite resuscitation efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blood loss due to severe lower limb injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi was arrested and charged with causing a fatal traffic accident, a crime punishable by up to eight years in prison. The driver claimed to have momentarily lost consciousness, a claim being investigated by prosecutors.
The court initially imposed a three-month detention on the 57-year-old driver, with the possibility of release upon posting a 40,000 PLN bail. The prosecution appealed this decision, and the driver subsequently posted bail and was released pending further proceedings.
Outpouring of Grief and Remembrance
Following Litewka’s death, condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Włodzimierz Czarzasty described him as irreplaceable, emphasizing his dedication to social activism and his genuine kindness. The Sejm observed a moment of silence in his memory, and President Karol Nawrocki posthumously awarded him the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
The reactions went beyond political formality, with many acknowledging Litewka’s ability to transcend partisan divides and focus on the issue at hand. Marcin Przydacz praised his kindness and collegiality.
Acknowledging Complexities
A comprehensive portrait of Łukasz Litewka must also acknowledge past legal issues. He faced charges in 2018 for exceeding his authority as a public official and improperly processing personal data related to participatory budgeting. He was also involved in a case concerning support letters during the 2015 parliamentary elections, resulting in fines in both cases.
Some fundraising campaigns organized under his name were also questioned, leading to an investigation into alleged fraud between 2020 and 2023, which was ultimately dropped due to a lack of evidence. He also held views on faith and abortion that sometimes differed from the mainstream position of the Left party.
A Legacy of Direct Action
However, he will be most remembered for the issues he resolved outside the public eye. Parents of children he helped, volunteers, animal caretakers, and local activists described him as an accessible and responsive individual.
Litewka fostered a community of action, not a formal party structure. People responded to his appeals, donating small amounts, sharing posts, transporting supplies, and offering support. This mechanism created a recognizable force – #TeamLitewka – symbolizing rapid, grassroots solidarity.
The Void Left Behind
He was a politician difficult to categorize: a leftist who spoke of faith, a parliamentarian who prioritized social action, and an internet personality who translated reach into real help. Supporters saw him as proof that politics could start with concrete good, while critics viewed him as a blend of activism, self-promotion, and politics. Even his opponents acknowledged the scale of help he mobilized.
Today, candles mark the roadside where he died. A seat remains empty in the Sejm. A community remains, built through years of working alongside him. The most pressing question is not who will replace him, but who will sustain the energy of those who believed that help could be organized quickly, simply, and across divides.
Łukasz Litewka’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 29th, at 1:30 PM at the Church of St. Joachim in Sosnowiec.
