Macron, Merz, and Starmer to Discuss Ukraine Strategy in London

French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with German leader Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London this Sunday to coordinate support for Ukraine and pressure on Moscow.

London Summit on Ukraine Support

The Élysée Palace announced on Friday, May 5, that President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer in London. Following their initial meeting, the three leaders will convene with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has also been invited to the capital.

The discussions aim to ensure close coordination regarding the trio’s joint agenda, which focuses on providing continued support to Ukraine and intensifying pressure on Russia. The Élysée stated that while Russia faces military, economic, and strategic failures, it remains committed to its bloody war despite a lack of success on the front lines.

Path Toward a Sustainable Peace

The meeting is intended to summarize ongoing efforts to secure a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine and across Europe. This initiative is being conducted primarily through the “Coalition of the Willing,” led by France and the United Kingdom, which coordinates states ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.

Earlier on Friday, Macron noted that the time has come to resume peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. He further confirmed that he has convened a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” in Paris for July 13 and 14, where leaders are expected to participate in France’s national holiday celebrations.

The Coalition of the Willing

Announced in 2025, this initiative seeks to foster cooperation for a durable peace through continued assistance to Ukraine and the enforcement of sanctions against Russia to compel Vladimir Putin to negotiate. The British government emphasized in an April 2025 statement that Putin must prove he is serious about peace by signing a full and unconditional ceasefire, matching the steps taken by Ukraine.

London is working closely with Kyiv and NATO to develop these long-term plans, ensuring that collective support for Ukraine strengthens the broader Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
