Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar campaigned across the country, promising change and a stronger relationship with the EU ahead of Sunday’s elections.
Magyar’s Campaign Trail and Message
Opposition leader Péter Magyar visited Hajdúsámson, Újfehértó, Balmazújváros, and Püspökladány during the final days of the campaign, culminating in a rally in Debrecen. He reported visiting over 700 settlements, witnessing both decay and hope.
Magyar stated, “Tomorrow we will defeat Fidesz and liberate our beautiful country from everything with which Fidesz has poisoned it – from corruption, cronyism, lies, and impoverishment.”
Orbán’s Replacement is Just the First Step
Magyar believes defeating Orbán’s Fidesz party is only the beginning, outlining plans to rebuild and unify Hungary. He aims to address internal divisions within the country.
EU Integration and a New Constitution
Magyar affirmed Hungary’s place within the European Union, regardless of Orbán’s previous skepticism. Supporters at his rallies chanted “Europa” and “Russians go home.”
He pledged to establish a “democratic constitutional state” by April 13th, ending funding for “propaganda-driven public media” and publishing secret government contracts and protocols.
Magyar plans to create a new constitution with input from professionals, parties, and citizens, subject to a national referendum.

Orbán’s Final Rally
Viktor Orbán held his closing campaign rally at Saint Trinity Square in Budapest, drawing a smaller crowd than Magyar’s event. Supporters expressed concerns about a potential opposition victory and perceived EU control.
Fidesz supporters voiced fears of being “controlled by the European Union” and of funds being allocated to Ukraine.
