Péter Magyar’s Tisza party has won Hungary’s parliamentary elections, defeating Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz after 16 years in power, with Orban offering his congratulations.
Magyar Claims Decisive Victory
“We did it. Tisza and Hungary have won the elections,” declared Péter Magyar, adding, “We won, and not just a little, but a lot, a lot.” He stated that no party in history has received such a strong mandate, thanking voters for approximately 3.3 million votes.
Magyar believes Tisza will secure a two-thirds majority in parliament. He emphasized that the victory was achieved despite opposition from the ruling party, which he accused of using state resources, special services, and misinformation campaigns.
Orban Acknowledges Defeat
Viktor Orbán conceded the election, stating the results were “clear and painful.” He acknowledged that his party was not given the opportunity to govern and offered congratulations to Magyar’s Tisza party.
Orbán stated that regardless of the outcome, his party would continue to serve Hungary and the Hungarian nation.
Partial Results Show Significant Shift
According to the National Election Office, with 91.90% of votes counted, Tisza is projected to win 138 seats, while Fidesz will receive 54.
Magyar’s Background and Rise to Prominence
Péter Magyar is a former member of Fidesz, having worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Hungary’s permanent representative to the EU.
He gained wider recognition in 2024 after criticizing corruption within Orbán’s system following the presidential pardon of a person convicted of covering up pedophilia, leading to his departure from Fidesz. His YouTube address garnered millions of views and sparked large-scale protests.
Magyar subsequently led the Respect and Freedom Party (Tisza), achieving a second-place finish in the 2024 European Parliament elections.
Gratitude and a Message of Unity
Magyar thanked voters, family, colleagues, and volunteers for their support over the past two years, attributing the victory to a love for the homeland and faith.
He underscored that the victory of his party represents a win for all Hungarians.
