Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar began his first foreign trip in Krakow, meeting with Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś before heading to Warsaw for high-level talks with Polish government officials.
Krakow Visit and Diplomatic Tradition
The Hungarian Prime Minister’s visit to Krakow included a tour of the Wawel Cathedral and a meeting with Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś. Magyar also laid flowers at the monument of St. John Paul II and visited sites significant to Hungarian history, including the cross of St. Hedwig and the tomb of King Stefan Batory.
At a press briefing, Magyar emphasized that it is a long-standing tradition for newly elected Hungarian leaders to visit Poland first, adding that choosing Krakow for the start of his trip was his personal decision. He expressed his desire to restore Polish-Hungarian relations to their previously high level.
Statements on Zbigniew Ziobro
Regarding former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who recently announced he was in the United States, Magyar clarified that the Hungarian government only learned of the move through the media. He stated that official information indicates Ziobro did not leave Hungary through a Schengen border crossing, suggesting he departed from another EU country.
Magyar noted that the departure of Ziobro and PiS member Marcin Romanowski occurred prior to his own swearing-in as Prime Minister on May 9.
Upcoming Agenda in Warsaw
After his time in Krakow, Magyar will travel to Warsaw by train to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Karol Nawrocki, and leadership from the Sejm and Senate. He is accompanied by seven ministers, including those responsible for foreign affairs, economy, defense, and culture.
The Polish government has confirmed that several ministers, including the heads of finance, interior, and infrastructure, will participate in the meetings. Following the Polish visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Vienna before returning to Budapest.
