Major NATO Operation in the Norwegian Sea: Searching for Russian Submarine Duzgunce

NATO forces are conducting a large-scale operation in the Norwegian Sea to locate a Russian submarine, the Duzgunce, amid concerns it may have posed a threat to the American aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.

NATO Forces’ Operation in the Norwegian Sea

British, Norwegian, and American forces are launching extensive searches in the Norwegian Sea to locate a Russian submarine. According to reports, the vessel was alleged to have “threatened” the American aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. Since Sunday, P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft have carried out a total of 27 combat missions. The press highlights that these aircraft are equipped with a range of “secret sensors, torpedoes, and sonar buoys capable of being deployed into the water to detect submarine sounds.”

Incident During Exercises

According to a report, the incident occurred approximately 60 miles west of the Lofoten Islands, where the carrier group of the USS Gerald R. Ford conducted joint exercises with the Norwegian Navy. Sonar systems detected an approaching submarine identified as Russian. Its maneuvers were deemed threatening to the American carrier. Both British and Norwegian media suggest that NATO’s response appears more significant than usual in such scenarios. A “Sun” reporter called it a “highly unusual escalation.”

Norwegian Military on Russian Activity in the Norwegian Sea

Lieutenant Colonel Brynjar Stordal of the Norwegian Operational Headquarters confirmed to local newspaper “Fremover” that Russians regularly monitor NATO exercises using aircraft, surface vessels, and submarines. He did not disclose further details about the current operations in the Norwegian Sea. Meanwhile, former submarine captain Ryan Ramsay told “The Sun” that these actions “demonstrate NATO’s control.” He added, “Either they have already located the sub and are holding it, or they haven’t yet and are trying to track it down.” Former navy commander Tom Sharpe, also in “The Sun,” stated it “looks like they have found the Russian sub and are attacking it.”
