Man, 39, Killed During Police Intervention in Bytom

A 39-year-old man died after police opened fire during an intervention when he allegedly charged officers with swords in Bytom on Monday.

Incident Background

The incident occurred on Monday (March 2) when Bytom police received a report from a concerned family member who had not been in contact with their relative since December. When officers arrived at the address and received no response, firefighters forced entry.

Confrontation

Upon entering the apartment, a 39-year-old man in a winter jacket rushed at officers aggressively while holding a sword and threatened to use it, barricading himself inside. Police conducted negotiations for over two hours before counter-terrorists forced entry.

Police Response

During the intervention, the man charged at police with two swords. Being highly agitated and ignoring commands to drop the weapons, police fired their service weapons in what they described as a situation of direct threat to life and health.

Aftermath

The injured 39-year-old was taken to hospital where he died after a few hours despite medical treatment. The case is being investigated under prosecutor supervision.
