A 43-year-old man was temporarily arrested after firing shots at a high school in central Warsaw, damaging glass elements but causing no injuries.
Shooting Incident at School
Staff at Liceum Ogólnokształcące Społeczne nr 17 on Marszałkowska Street in Warsaw informed authorities about shots fired at the school on Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Preliminary findings indicate the perpetrator fired several shots from an air pistol at the building, damaging glass elements. A criminal technician from Śródmieście and an investigation team conducted an on-site inspection. Bullet marks from an air gun were visible on the doors and windows. According to the police, no one was injured.
Arrest and Investigation
On the same day, in Mokotów, in an apartment on Gagarina Street, police arrested a 43-year-old man. During a search of his apartment, officers found and secured an air pistol type wiatrówka and metal balls used as ammunition. In the following days, police received a report from the school director, interviewed witnesses, and secured additional evidence in the case. According to the police, the items secured in the 43-year-old’s apartment did not require permits to possess.
Suspect’s Explanation
During interrogation, the arrested man explained his behavior by saying he had an argument with his wife. He claimed he was returning from work and on Marszałkowska Street noticed pigeons pulling trash from bins. He fired shots in their direction, unaware that he hit the school building, police reported.
Charges and Consequences
For his actions, the 43-year-old was charged with exposing a person to direct danger of loss of life or serious bodily injury and property damage. His actions were also classified as hooliganism. According to police, he acted under conditions of multiple recidivism, having been previously convicted of similar crimes.
On Saturday, the Regional Police Command for Warsaw I (Śródmieście) announced that a judge decided on the man’s temporary detention for three months. The 43-year-old faces up to 8 years in prison.
