Warsaw police responded to reports of a man struggling with an elderly woman and stealing her handbag containing money on Bemowo.

Officers arrived to find two witnesses holding the suspect, who was aggressive and attempting to break free. He was subsequently handcuffed and detained.

Investigators determined the suspect had contacted the elderly woman by phone, impersonating a police officer and requesting funds to aid in the capture of a thief gang.

He instructed her to meet him at a designated location near a bus stop on Bemowo, where she arrived with 60,000 złoty in a bag. The suspect attempted to snatch the bag, causing it to rip and the money to fall to the ground.

Witness Intervention and Arrest

Two witnesses immediately intervened, subduing the suspect. The elderly woman was unharmed and did not require medical attention.

Legal Consequences

The 41-year-old suspect was taken into police custody and found to have a blood alcohol content of two per mille. He has been charged with attempted fraud.

Following a request from the Warsaw-Wola District Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect has been temporarily arrested by the court. Attempted fraud carries a potential sentence of up to 8 years in prison.
