A 38-year-old man has been arrested and detained for three months in connection with a March 2026 fraud attempt targeting an elderly woman in Raciąż, Poland.
Suspect Detained in Fraud Case
A 38-year-old man suspected of attempting to defraud an elderly woman in the Raciąż municipality has been temporarily arrested for three months. Prosecutors allege he posed as a police officer and, along with others, tried to convince the victim that a relative needed urgent financial assistance following a purported accident.
Details of the Attempted Scam
The incident occurred in March 2026 in the Raciąż municipality. According to prosecutors, the man approached the elderly woman claiming to be a police officer. Investigators determined he did not act alone.
The prosecutor, Bartosz Maliszewski, stated the man and other unidentified individuals had previously misled the victim into believing her family member had been in a traffic accident and her cousin needed at least 50,000 zł in financial aid.
Fraud Thwarted, Suspect Identified
The transfer of funds did not occur, and the attempted fraud was stopped thanks to the vigilance of the woman’s family and police intervention. The suspect fled the scene.
After approximately one month, police in the Mazowieckie province identified the man. A warrant was issued for his arrest and a search of his residence. Upon arrest, he was charged with attempted fraud.
Suspect Confesses, Detention Ordered
Prosecutor Maliszewski reported the suspect confessed to the crime and provided a statement detailing his role.
Prosecutors requested a temporary arrest from the court, citing concerns about obstruction of justice, the fact that all involved parties had not been identified, the severity of the potential sentence, and the risk of flight.
The Płońsk court granted the prosecution’s request, ordering the 38-year-old’s detention for three months.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators emphasize the case is ongoing and are investigating whether the same perpetrators committed other crimes.
