Police in Sonata Street detained a man who attached license plates from another vehicle to his newly purchased car without plates.
Incident Details
On Monday, February 16, in the afternoon hours, police intervention took place on Sonata Street resulting in the detention of a man who, according to officers, used license plates assigned to another vehicle.
According to information provided, the man had previously purchased a car that was delivered without license plates. Fearing the consequences of driving a car without plates and the possibility of having the parked vehicle towed by Municipal Guard, he removed plates from another vehicle he owned and mounted them on the newly purchased car.
Arrest and Consequences
The unusual behavior drew the attention of bystanders, who reported the matter to the police. The patrol that arrived at the scene confirmed that the plates on the vehicle were assigned to a different car. The man was arrested. He spent the night in a police detention room, and on Tuesday, February 17, further proceedings will be conducted with him.
Legal Consequences
Using license plates not assigned to a vehicle is a crime.
Since October 1, 2023, Article 306c of the Penal Code has been in force, which concerns unauthorized manipulation of license plates of motor vehicles. The provision provides liability, among other things, for the taking of a license plate, counterfeiting or altering a plate for use as an authentic one, as well as for using a plate not assigned to the vehicle on which it was placed. The penalty provided for in the provision is imprisonment for 3 months to 5 years.
Penal Code Article 306c
§ 1. Whoever takes a license plate of a motor vehicle, allowing this vehicle to be put into traffic on the territory of the Republic of Poland, or in order to use it as an authentic license plate of a motor vehicle, counterfeits or alters it, shall be subject to imprisonment for 3 months to 5 years.
§ 2. The same penalty shall be imposed on whoever uses a license plate of a motor vehicle not assigned to the vehicle on which it was placed, or uses as authentic a counterfeit or altered license plate of a motor vehicle.
