A 41-year-old recidivist was arrested after kicking a woman down a flight of stairs at the Łódź-Żabieniec railway station on May 22, causing multiple injuries, including a broken rib.
The Assault and Medical Findings
The incident occurred on May 22 at the Łódź-Żabieniec train station as a woman was heading down the stairs toward the street. She was kicked in the head by a 41-year-old man walking behind her, causing her to fall. The victim suffered a head contusion, a hematoma, and a fractured rib.
According to an expert witness, these injuries resulted in a physical impairment lasting longer than seven days. Under the Penal Code, this classifies the act as a crime under Article 157, Paragraph 1, which carries a stricter penalty than offenses involving lighter injuries.
Criminal Record and Legal Consequences
Monitoring footage captured the attack, leading police to locate the suspect on June 9. The 41-year-old has an extensive criminal history, including violence against law enforcement, robbery, and criminal threats, having already served six years in prison.
The Łódź-Bałuty District Prosecutor’s Office has charged the man with causing bodily harm, noting that the act was committed in a hooliganistic manner—publicly and without provocation—while being a repeat offender. He faces up to eight years and six months in prison. Prosecutors have requested temporary detention, citing a flight risk.
A Bizarre Justification
During questioning, the man admitted to the act but provided a surreal explanation for the violence. He claimed he kicked the victim because he thought she was reaching into his partner’s handbag—a claim not supported by the gathered evidence, according to the Łódź District Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson, Paweł Jasiak.
