A 37-year-old man died of hypothermia after being abandoned on a roadside by unidentified individuals in freezing temperatures.
Investigation Launched After Discovery
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Ostrów Mazowiecka is conducting an investigation following the discovery on January 30, 2026, of the body of 37-year-old Michał P. The proceedings concern suspicion of exposing him to direct danger to life and unintentional causing of death.
According to spokesperson prosecutor Elżbieta Edyta Łukasiewicz, the investigation targets two offenses: exposing to direct danger to life and unintentional causing of death under Articles 160 §1 and 155 of the Criminal Code.
Victim Left Without Clothing in Freezing Temperatures
Investigators determined that Michał P. left his home on January 23, 2026, and did not return, with his family reporting his disappearance. Police from Łomży searched for him using drones before finding his body in a deep ditch along the Via Baltica route.
Preliminary findings suggest Michał P. was traveling by car with unidentified individuals from Warsaw to Łomży. In the early morning hours at very low ambient temperatures, he was left without outer clothing on the S61 road.
Autopsy Confirms Hypothermia as Cause of Death
The body was discovered on January 30, 2026. An autopsy performed by a pathologist did not reveal any injuries inflicted by third parties, with the expert preliminarily determining hypothermia as the cause of death.
Investigators are continuing efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify the circumstances of the man being abandoned on the road, with ongoing actions to determine the reasons for his abandonment and the detailed circumstances of his death.
