Man Skips from North Bridge into Vistula and Swims to Shore

On Tuesday, 16 December, a man jumped from Warsaw’s North Bridge into the Vistula, swam to shore, and was rescued by fire‑fighters, police and medical teams.

Emergency Response

At 19:40 local time, Warsaw services responded to a report that a man had leapt from the North Bridge (named after Marie Skłodowska‑Curie) into the Vistula.

Fire‑fighters, police and a medical rescue unit were dispatched to the scene.

Bridge and Location

The North Bridge is a major crossing on the Vistula in the northern part of the city, linking the northern district of Bielany with Białołęka.

Rescue Process

Fire‑fighters found the man already at the riverbank, lying beneath the bridge on a ledge. Immediate care was required to prevent hypothermia.

A thermal blanket was used to limit heat loss, after which medical rescuers took over.

Police Investigation

Police at the scene worked to establish the circumstances of the jump and determine what led the man to make the decision.

Recent Similar Incidents

In recent months, Warsaw authorities have responded to several Vistula incidents, including a 23 April 2025 jump at the Poniatowski Bridge, where the individual similarly swam to shore and was taken into custody.
