Man’s Body Found in Residence; Carbon Monoxide Suspected as Cause

On January 21, 2026, emergency services responded to a residence in Szydłowiec where a man’s body was found; carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.

Incident Details

At 7:15 PM on January 21, 2026, a report of a body was received by the County Command Headquarters in Szydłowiec. The report was made by a third party who entered the residence and found the body. Emergency services, including the fire department, were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters conducted measurements for carbon monoxide presence. The measuring devices did not show elevated carbon monoxide levels in the building. A doctor summoned to the scene confirmed the man’s death. Five fire brigades participated in the operations, along with police officers and a prosecutor.

Investigation and Statistics

Further procedural actions are being conducted under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office. According to the Government Security Center, the victim from Szydłowiec is recorded as a fatal carbon monoxide poisoning case. The exact cause and circumstances of death will be clarified during the ongoing investigation.

Yesterday, 3 people died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The day before (January 20), there was 1 fatal victim in Makowiec (Mazowieckie voivodeship).

Since October 1, 44 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. During the heating season, services regularly warn about the danger of carbon monoxide, which is a gas undetectable by humans and can appear in buildings with fuel-burning devices.

Regulatory Changes

The Headquarters of the State Fire Service also reminds about changes in regulations regarding detectors: residential buildings are required to be equipped with an autonomous smoke detector (and in the case of burning solid, liquid or gaseous fuels, also a carbon monoxide detector) from January 1, 2030, while accommodation facilities are required to be equipped by June 30, 2026.
