Man’s Home-locked Standoff in Sanok Ends with Police Gunfire, Victims Transported

On Thursday 20 November, a man locked himself and his mother in an apartment in Sanok, was shot by police while attempting to attack officers with a sharp weapon, leading to fatalities and emergency medical responses.

Incident at Sanok Apartment

Police received a report on Thursday, 20 November that an aggressive man had locked himself and his mother inside a dwelling in the Wójtostwo neighbourhood of Sanok (Podkarpackie). A gas‑sensing device triggered, raising suspicions he might have turned off the gas valves. Officers entered the premises with fire‑fighting support.

Gunfire During Assault

Inside the apartment, the suspect allegedly threatened two police officers and a firefighter with a “sharp tool,” reported by Korso Sanockie portal as a machete. Police first used direct physical force, then discharged their firearms. Despite resuscitation attempts, the man died. Officers found the body of the woman in the apartment and continued the investigation.

Medical Response and Transport

All officers received immediate medical assistance on the scene. They were transported to hospitals in Sanok and Brzozów. The firefighter was airlifted by LPR helicopter to Rzeszów hospital, where he sustained lacerations to his torso and arm, as reported by Polish Radio Rzeszów.
