Maria Corina Machado Won’t Attend Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado will be represented by her daughter at the Oslo Nobel ceremony after a year of hiding, while she remains under travel restrictions.

Machado Won’t Attend Nobel In Person

The Norwegian Nobel Committee confirmed that Machado will not travel to Oslo for the ceremony. Her daughter, Ana Corina Machado, will accept the award and deliver her mother’s speech. Machado’s current location is unknown; reports indicate she is en route to Norway, but Venezuelan authorities have imposed a travel ban on her.

Update 12:40 – Daughter to Accept Award

At noon, the committee stated that Machado had not yet flown to Norway. Later that day, it was reported that she might reach Oslo, though she remains effectively in hiding. She has called on supporters worldwide to organized a “March for Peace and Freedom,” which on Dec 6 took place in more than twenty countries and eighty cities.

Machado “Lives Under Threat of Death”

Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Machado’s whereabouts are unknown and that the Venezuelan regime is prepared to use all means against opposition. He added that she faces death threats both within and beyond the country’s borders.

Machado Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Machado was announced the laureate on 11 October. Born in 1967 in Caracas, she has been a prominent opposition leader against President Nicolás Maduro. The award recognises her relentless work for democratic rights and a peaceful transition away from dictatorship. The Committee highlighted Venezuela’s shift to an authoritarian state amid a humanitarian and economic crisis. After her 2024 presidential candidacy was blocked, Machado supported another opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia.
