Former NIK president Marian Banaś has announced his candidacy for mayor of Krakow, arguing that his extensive background in government service makes him uniquely qualified to lead the city.
A Call to Public Service
Speaking on TOK FM, Marian Banaś asserted that he is well-prepared to serve as mayor due to his previous roles, including Minister of Finance, head of the National Revenue Administration, and president of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). He stated that he is an ordinary citizen who loves Krakow and wants to restore the city’s rightful status.
Banaś emphasized that he possesses significant administrative experience that should not be squandered. He expressed his readiness to be at the disposal of residents and noted that he trusts them to make the right decision regarding the city’s leadership.
Proposed Policy Shifts
Regarding his potential administration, Banaś outlined specific policy reversals he would implement if elected. He stated he would lift restrictions on the entry of older vehicles that do not meet current European Union emissions standards.
Additionally, he intends to authorize the burning of dry wood in fireplaces. Banaś argued that such fuel does not negatively impact the city’s air quality.
Critique of the Previous Administration
Banaś commented on the recent referendum regarding the recall of Aleksander Miszalski. He attributed the political turmoil to the poor performance of Miszalski’s image advisors, specifically criticizing social media PR tactics as ineffective and misguided.
Prior to the referendum, Banaś had already expressed concern over what he described as growing exhaustion, chaos, and a lack of dialogue in Krakow. He reiterated that the city deserves a competent steward who prioritizes listening to its inhabitants.
The Evolving Electoral Landscape
In addition to Banaś, Bartosz Bocheńczak has announced his candidacy on behalf of the Confederation party. Meanwhile, former MP Łukasz Gibała, who lost the 2024 mayoral runoff to Aleksander Miszalski, is currently weighing another bid for the office.
