Marshal Czarzasty to Use “Marshal’s Veto” – Siwiec Urges MPs to Take It Seriously

After Poland’s new Sejm Marshal announced his intent to deploy a “marshal’s veto,” parliamentary chief Marek Siwiec warned fellow MPs to treat the measure with seriousness amid the country’s fragile political climate.

Siwiec Discusses “Marshal’s Veto”

Marek Siwiec explained in an interview that Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty had said he would apply a “marshal’s veto,” a concept that does not exist constitutionally but serves as a symbol of opposition.

Siwiec noted that Czarzasty’s remarks were intended to signal the seriousness of the situation in Poland and internationally, warning that Parliament cannot simply process every bill one after another without due scrutiny.

Chief of the Sejm Secretariat Clarifies Marshal’s Comments

The chief explained that the marshal’s goal was to encourage MPs to first draft laws that would be essential during difficult times, rather than immediately rushing all legislation to the legislature.

Siwiec described the veto as a “red light” to those who might try to delay or obstruct parliamentary work, emphasizing the need for a cautious approach.

Sejm Marshal Announces Intention to Use Veto

Following the coalition agreement after the 15 October 2023 elections, and after the resignation of Szymon Hołownia, Włodzimierz Czarzasty was elected marshal of the Sejm on 21 November. He pledged to act as a guardian of the rights of the parliamentary‑democratic state set out in the Polish constitution.

He stated that, as a left‑wing politician elected by members of the coalition, he will serve the interests of its 11 million voters and prioritize cooperation with the government.

Czarzasty declared that he would use the marshal’s veto against harmful legislative proposals that serve populism or undermine the functioning of the state.
