Hundreds of firefighters, police, and specialized military units are battling an intense crown fire across hundreds of hectares in the Mazovian Voivodeship as authorities warn of worsening weather conditions.
Escalating Firefighting Operations
Due to drought conditions and gusty winds, the fire spread rapidly toward the Mińsk district, forcing the mobilization of significant additional resources. By Friday morning, more than 800 firefighters and 200 vehicles were engaged in the operation.
Reinforcements include specialized forest fire platoons from across the region, as well as personnel from the Fire Service Academy, the Krakow Aspirant School, the Territorial Defence Force, and Ground Forest Fire Fighting (GFFF) groups from Poznań, Łódź, Lublin, and Olsztyn.
Police Intervention and Road Closures
A heavy police presence of 248 officers and 70 vehicles is securing the scene and restricting access to the forest. A police Black Hawk helicopter has conducted 62 water drops since Thursday to assist ground crews.
Authorities have closed a 29-kilometer stretch of National Road 50 between Łochów and Stanisławów. Traffic is being diverted through National Road 62 and Voivodeship Road 637 to ensure the efficiency of emergency services.
Government Assessment and External Offers
Prime Minister Donald Tusk attended a briefing in Międzyleś, confirming that while significant progress was made overnight, the situation remains volatile and depends heavily on wind conditions.
Tusk noted that Slovakia has offered assistance, though it is currently not required. The Ministry of the Interior and Administration has urged the public to stay away from the fire zone to allow rescuers space to work.
Unfavorable Meteorological Outlook
The fire, which began Thursday afternoon in the Wołomin district, is characterized as a crown fire, where flames travel through the treetops. Meteorologists report no rain is expected Friday, with temperatures reaching 21°C and continued gusty winds.
The forecast suggests conditions may only improve by Saturday, when increasing cloud cover and potential rain showers or thunderstorms are expected to move into the region from the west and southwest.
