Massive Forest Fire in Lubelskie: Pilot Killed in Aerial Crash

Firefighters and soldiers are battling a massive 300-hectare forest fire in Lubelskie, Poland, which has claimed the life of a pilot during aerial firefighting operations.

Massive Fire and Fatal Aircraft Crash

Since Tuesday afternoon, firefighters have been battling a forest fire in the Biłgoraj district’s Józefów Forest District, covering approximately 300 hectares.

The operation is supported by 70 soldiers from the 2nd Lubelskie Territorial Defense Brigade and various aircraft, including four Dromader planes, four State Forest helicopters, and two Black Hawks. During the mission, a Dromader firefighting plane crashed, resulting in the death of the pilot.

Adverse Weather and Aerial Tactics

Police report the situation remains “very demanding,” as strong winds and variable conditions hinder both ground and air operations. To reach areas where ground access is limited, helicopter crews are utilizing Bambi Buckets, having successfully completed 50 water drops so far.

Community Impact and Local Accounts

A Józefów resident reported thick smoke moving toward their home, expressing concern for local animals and the region’s wildlife, including lynx and wolves. Meanwhile, Jolanta, a volunteer firefighter and high school graduate, participated in the firefighting efforts before attending her final exams.

Mayor’s Warning and Public Anxiety

Mayor Marek Banaszek has urged residents to conserve water as the local network is under significant strain. He noted that residents in the Młynki estate are particularly terrified, adding that while he feels personal fear, no evacuation is currently required unless wind conditions shift.
