A major, uncontrolled forest fire erupted near Międzyleś on May 28, prompting the evacuation of Ołdakowizna as 250 firefighters and multiple aircraft battle the blaze amidst challenging weather conditions.
Escalating Firefront
A significant forest fire broke out near Międzyleś in the Wołomin district on May 28, shortly after 1:00 PM. Initially covering approximately 2,500 square meters, the fire expanded rapidly toward National Road 50, fueled by strong winds.
By 7:00 PM, officials estimated the affected area had grown to roughly 30 hectares, though precise measurements remain difficult due to the ongoing nature of the suppression efforts.
Aerial and Ground Response
The firefighting operation involves 65 fire brigades, totaling about 250 personnel from the Wołomin, Mińsk, and Węgrów districts. The ground units are receiving critical support from a police Black Hawk helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket and four aircraft dispatched by the State Forests.
Crews are currently focused on preventing the fire from crossing National Road 50, which remains a primary obstacle due to the wind-driven intensity of the fire front.
Traffic Disruptions and Evacuations
Authorities have ordered the evacuation of the village of Ołdakowizna in the Mińsk district, providing buses for the residents. Additional police units have been deployed to secure the perimeter and assist with the evacuation.
National Road 50 was closed to traffic starting at 6:28 PM due to heavy smoke, with local detours organized through the DW637 and DW62 routes. Officials indicate that these traffic restrictions are expected to last for several hours.
