Massive Helsinki Blaze Destroys 62 Apartments; Negligence Suspected

A devastating fire broke out in a Helsinki apartment block on the night of May 23–24, destroying 62 homes and requiring a ten-hour emergency response by 30 firefighting units.

Police Identify Cause of Fire

Authorities have stated that the fire was likely ignited by a gas grill left on a balcony. According to police emergency coordinator Minna Rintamäki, the apartment where the blaze originated was occupied by two elderly residents.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Approximately 30 fire and rescue units participated in the operation, marking one of the largest fires in Helsinki in recent years. While residents were successfully evacuated, no significant injuries were reported following the ten-hour operation.

Total Building Inhabitability

The roof of the residential block was completely destroyed, while stairwells and utility installations sustained critical damage. Authorities have confirmed that none of the residents can return to their homes.

Public Safety Investigation

Although the fire did not reach every unit, water and smoke damage, combined with ruined infrastructure, have rendered all apartments unusable. Police are currently investigating the incident as a case of gross negligence threatening public safety.
