A pile-up involving over 100 vehicles on Michigan’s I-196 highway leaves multiple injured but no fatalities.
Massive Accident in Michigan
On the morning of Monday, January 19, a powerful multi-vehicle accident occurred on Michigan’s I-196 interstate highway. According to Associated Press, over 100 vehicles collided with each other or went off the road. Michigan state police closed both lanes of the highway as emergency services worked to clear the scene, including more than 30 trucks.
Police reported multiple injuries but confirmed there were no fatalities in the accident.
Winter Storm Causes Disruption
The accident is a result of a powerful winter storm currently affecting the United States. The National Weather Service has issued nationwide warnings about low temperatures and possible snowstorms in many states, from northern Minnesota through Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio, to Pennsylvania and New York.
“Snow caused by the so-called Great Lakes effect paralyzed the region,” according to reports.
Severe Cold Warnings in Poland
Warnings about severe frost are also in effect in Poland, where temperatures are forecast to drop to -18 to -15 degrees Celsius. Alerts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management are in effect in the eastern parts of the country until Thursday, January 22, at 10.
Truck Collision on Hungarian M1
On Monday, a multi-vehicle accident also occurred on Hungary’s M1 motorway, creating a traffic jam of over ten kilometers in both directions. About thirty kilometers from Budapest, several trucks collided, causing traffic to move in only one lane in both directions toward Budapest, Vienna, and Bratysław.
Traffic on the M1 has been difficult for several months due to ongoing construction work. The Hungarian government has lowered the price of the annual motorway vignette for several counties through which the M1 passes.
