Massive Russian Air Strike Hits Kyiv; Poland Scrambles Fighter Jets

A large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed at least one person and injured 21, while Polish military jets were deployed to secure its airspace during the bombardment.

Devastating Night for the Capital

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that a massive overnight Russian strike caused multiple fires and damaged civilian infrastructure and residential buildings. Preliminary findings confirm at least one fatality and 21 injuries, with an additional three people wounded in the Kyiv region.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that a 15-year-old boy was among the injured. Thirteen people required hospitalization, three of whom remain in serious condition, while eight others received aid on-site. Damage was reported across all districts of the city.

Nature of the Assault

In one district, a five-story residential building was struck, causing a fire that engulfed nearly every floor, while a student dormitory was attacked in another area. The Kyiv Regional Military Administration confirmed that Russia utilized a combination of strike drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Polish Military Response

Before 2:00 AM, the Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces announced the activation of military aircraft to secure its airspace in response to the Russian long-range aviation activity near the Ukrainian border. These measures were characterized as preventive to protect Polish territory.

After 5:00 AM, the Command confirmed that the operation had concluded, with ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance returning to standard activity. No violations of Polish airspace were recorded, and officials expressed gratitude for the support of NATO, French, and Dutch forces.

Russian Battlefield Struggles

Estonian foreign intelligence chief Kaupo Rosin noted that Russia has little time left to win the war, suggesting that in four to five months, it may lose the ability to negotiate from a position of strength. He indicated that the Russian army is currently losing more soldiers than it can recruit.

Analysts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies reported that Russian advances have slowed to a standstill, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Russia is losing 15,000 to 20,000 soldiers killed per month. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense estimated over 35,000 Russian casualties in April alone.
