A large sinkhole, 50 meters deep, has opened up on a busy street in Bangkok, causing disruptions to infrastructure and traffic, with authorities warning of potential further deterioration.
Cause of the Sinkhole
The sinkhole was caused by the construction of an underground railway station, according to officials. However, the Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported that the incident was the result of groundwater movements, which led to a water pipe bursting.
Incident Details
The sinkhole appeared on Wednesday morning, September 24, on a busy road in Bangkok. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but three vehicles were damaged. A video of the incident showed the moment the sinkhole opened up, with one car hanging on the edge of the hole.
Current Situation and Concerns
The sinkhole is 50 meters deep and is located near Vajira Hospital and a police station. The Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, has expressed concern about the situation. The governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, has warned that the situation may worsen due to heavy rainfall, which is eroding the soil.
