Poland braces for severe winter weather as two waves of heavy snow and arctic temperatures are forecast this weekend.
Heavy Snowfall Expected
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reports that on Friday, February 13, snowfall in northern and northwestern Poland could increase the snow cover by 5 to 15 cm in some areas. A second wave of snowfall is forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
Arctic Air Masses Arrive
IMGW spokesperson Agnieszka Prasek announced a significant weather change this weekend, with arctic air masses bringing temperature drops and snowfall. Minimum temperatures are expected to reach -14°C in the northeast, -8 to -6°C in central regions, and -2°C in the west. Forecasters warn of freezing rain causing icy conditions, especially in northern areas.
Continued Cold Next Week
Prasek further stated that temperatures are expected to continue dropping next week as very cold, arctic air masses bring severe frost. In the northeast, temperatures could locally drop to -23°C. The strong cold will also affect central and eastern regions.
