Donald Trump wants to meet Ukrainian President Zelensky at Davos, but Zelensky hesitates, setting conditions for any talks to be effective.
Trump’s Meeting Request
Donald Trump wants to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zełenski and several European leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, according to Axios citing an American official. However, the source notes that breakthroughs should not be expected from these meetings.
Portal notes that the war in Ukraine has moved further down the agenda due to the battle over Greenland. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president has not yet decided whether to attend the forum. His decision depends on whether a meeting with Trump is organized; if so, Zełenski will travel to Davos.
Zełenski’s Conditions
Volodymyr Zełenski wrote on social media that “Ukraine is ready to meet with all partners if these meetings help protect lives and ensure security” and “if these meetings prove to be truly effective.” He emphasized that his team has prepared all necessary documents, particularly with America, regarding security guarantees and Ukraine’s reconstruction.
The Ukrainian president stated that if partners are not ready, all Ukrainian representatives must focus on concrete matters: air defense systems, energy equipment for reconstruction, and support packages for the front and communities. He added that every Ukrainian official must now deliver results and fulfill their tasks.
Ukrainian Delegation Activities
Ukrainian peace negotiators met in Davos with security advisors from France, Germany, and Great Britain. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umierow reported this and stated that further meetings with partners are planned regarding security guarantees, economic development, and Ukraine’s reconstruction.
On Tuesday, January 20, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will meet with Kirill Dmitriev, an advisor to Vladimir Putin, to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
