Six countries—France, the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan—announced Thursday their readiness to contribute to security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Strait of Hormuz Security Concerns
Six nations – France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan – announced on Thursday that they are “ready to contribute” to ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is being blocked by Iran in connection with US and Israeli attacks on the country.
“We declare our readiness to contribute to the efforts necessary to guarantee the safety of navigation in the strait,” the six countries wrote in a joint statement.
Call for Moratorium on Attacks
A “immediate and complete moratorium on attacks against civilian infrastructure, especially against oil and gas installations” was also demanded.
Iran’s Disruptions Since February 28th
Since the start of the war, which began on February 28th with attacks by the USA and Israel on Iran, Tehran has been disrupting the transit of ships that it believes are linked to its enemies and their allies. It is also attacking petrochemical installations in the Persian Gulf states.
Global Oil Prices Surge
Approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil volume passes through the Strait of Hormuz under normal conditions. Its blockade has caused a sharp increase in the price of this commodity worldwide. (PAP)
