Overnight, retaliatory attacks between Israel, Iran, and regional proxies have dramatically escalated tensions across the Middle East, triggering widespread alarms.
Israel-Iran Conflict: Renewed Attacks and Rising Tensions
In response to Israeli and U.S. airstrikes targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran, the Iranian military launched a series of attacks on Israel and regional countries late Saturday into Sunday. Drone attacks were directed towards the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
Israel’s armed forces struck a key water facility in the Iranian town of Haftgel and two universities on Saturday. Tehran retaliated with rocket attacks on Israel, with the military reporting interceptions and alarms sounding in southern Israel.
Casualties and Regional Impact
The Israeli military confirmed the death of another soldier on Sunday, bringing the total number of Israeli soldiers killed in action since March 2nd to five.
Hezbollah and Attacks on U.S. Interests
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for separate attacks on bases in northern Israel. Additionally, the pro-Iranian militia Aszhab al-Kahf threatened strikes against American targets in Jordan.
Defense Systems Activated Across the Gulf
The United Arab Emirates’ air defense systems are actively responding to threats from rockets and drones, according to the UAE’s defense ministry. Reports indicate that explosions heard throughout the country are a result of interception operations.
Alerts and Damage in Kuwait and Bahrain
Air raid sirens also sounded in Kuwait and Bahrain. Kuwait’s army confirmed the downing of hostile missiles and reported fifteen drone strikes that caused a fire at the airport. In Bahrain, two workers were injured in an attack on the Aluminium Bahrain facility, which had already reduced production by 19% due to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
Extent of Iranian Strikes
According to Iranian organization Hrana, 701 strikes were registered in Iran within 24 hours leading up to Saturday afternoon, the highest number since the start of the conflict. 74% of these bombardments targeted Tehran, damaging civilian infrastructure, including a major drinking water facility. Hrana reports 1551 deaths in Iran since the start of the war, including 236 children.
Recent Developments in Tehran
AFP reported two powerful explosions were heard in northern Tehran early Sunday morning.
Origins of the Current Conflict
The Middle East conflict began on February 28th with Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iran. Tehran responded with attacks on both Israel and countries in the Persian Gulf region, including American military bases and civilian facilities like airports and petrochemical plants. Iran also blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for approximately 20% of global oil supplies.
