Międzylesie Forest Fire: Danger Persists as Hotspots Detected

Following a massive forest fire that consumed 300 hectares and forced the evacuation of 100 people in Międzylesie, authorities report that persistent hotspots continue to threaten the area.

Ongoing Containment Efforts

A forest fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in Międzylesie, Wołomin County, has affected approximately 300 hectares. While the area is secured and contained, spokesperson for the State Fire Service Captain Wojciech Gralec reported on Saturday that minor fire hotspots remain along the front line.

Firefighting efforts, which include the use of specialized ground units and a police Black Hawk helicopter, are focused on extinguishing these embers and monitoring high-temperature zones. Aerial water drops are currently being targeted at the remaining affected areas.

Strategic Operations and Resource Deployment

Nearly 1,300 firefighters and 335 vehicles from the State and Volunteer Fire Services are currently deployed, supported by police, the State Forests, and 120 Territorial Defense Force soldiers. Operations are expected to continue until the threat is completely eliminated.

Strategic command is holding briefings to coordinate crew rotations and the deployment of forest firefighting modules. Fatigue and difficult working conditions have necessitated a cyclical rotation of personnel to maintain full operational readiness.

Dynamic Conditions and Weather Risks

Mazovian Voivode Mariusz Frankowski noted that the situation remains dynamic due to unpredictable weather forecasts. While incoming rain may assist, potential wind gusts could reignite fire hotspots in certain areas.

During the peak of operations on Friday, five Dromader aircraft, three State Forests helicopters, and two police Black Hawks carried out over 300 water drops, releasing more than 470,000 liters of water. Firefighting crews continue to work through the night to clear firebreaks and douse the scorched terrain.
