A Medicover report reveals Polish Millennial workers are experiencing increased stress, chronic illness, and a surge in psychiatric and psychological consultations.
The Third Crisis: Technology and Its Toll
Millennial workers, born between 1980/81 and 1996, are now navigating a third major crisis alongside previous economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic: the rapid advancement of technology, particularly automation and artificial intelligence.
While technology aims to ease workloads, it often generates anxieties about the future, increasing tasks and expectations, leading to chronic stress and impacting both physical and mental health.
Rising Rates of Lifestyle Diseases
Data from Medicover shows nearly half of working Millennials in Poland have elevated cholesterol levels, and over a quarter have high blood pressure, increasing their risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
A Generation Defined by Economic Shocks
Initially labeled the “generation of two crises,” Millennials first faced the 2008 economic recession, characterized by job market instability and the rise of precarious employment contracts.
The COVID-19 pandemic then brought further disruption, job losses, and uncertainty, now compounded by the challenges posed by technological change.
Impact on Digestive Health and Diet
Poor diet, stress, and health problems negatively affect the digestive system; in 2024, visits to doctors for digestive issues among Polish workers increased by over 19% compared to 2022.
Nearly 47.5% of workers aged 30-49 have high cholesterol, 34.7% are overweight, 19.8% are obese, 26.8% have high blood pressure, and 13.9% have elevated glucose levels.
Seeking Mental Health Support
Despite not being the age group most likely to report stress, Millennials are the most frequent users of specialized mental health services.
Psychiatric consultations in this age group rose by 47% in 2024 compared to 2022, while psychological consultations increased by 14%.
Recognizing Stress-Related Symptoms
Symptoms indicating a need for medical attention, potentially stemming from stress, include chronic fatigue, concentration problems, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, brain fog, weight changes, hair loss, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, excessive sweating, and sleep difficulties.
Preventative Care is Key
Experts emphasize the importance of a holistic approach to health, including preventative care and seeking specialized support for mental health, as Millennials are increasingly doing.
