Ministry of Defense Employee Detained for Alleged Foreign Intelligence Collaboration

Polish military counter-intelligence has detained a Ministry of Defense employee suspected of collaborating with foreign intelligence services.

Detention Details

The Military Counter-intelligence Service (SKW) detained an employee of the Ministry of National Defense on Tuesday, February 3rd, at the ministry’s headquarters. According to a statement, the detained individual is suspected of collaborating with foreign intelligence. The investigation is being conducted by SKW in cooperation with the Department for Military Affairs of the National Prosecutor’s Office and the Military Gendarmerie.

The Ministry of National Defense stated that procedural activities are ongoing. The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office announced that information about the investigation, in which the MON employee was detained, will be provided after completion of procedural activities involving the detained individual, earliest on Wednesday.

According to Onet, the detained individual is a 60-year-old man who has worked at the Ministry of National Defense for 30 years, holding various positions during this time. The services had been gathering information about him for many months. A portal informant stated that the services searched the man’s workplace and residence. “His phones, computers, and memory devices were seized,” they said. It is unofficially reported by onet.pl that the detainee had direct contact and meetings with individuals identified as representatives of Eastern intelligence services.

Previous Case

On Tuesday morning, February 3rd, it was reported that the Zamość District Court had issued a verdict in the case of a Polish citizen who had been cooperating with Russian intelligence. The court found Paweł K. guilty of the alleged offenses, imposing a total sentence of 3.5 years in prison, according to spokesman for the Coordinator of Special Services, Jacek Dobrzyński.

The 50-year-old resident of Hrubieszów was accused, among other things, of transmitting information about security at Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport, which could have constituted assistance in planning an assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
