A container ship traveling through the Strait of Hormuz was struck by a missile on Tuesday, injuring eight crew members, including a Polish captain, according to maritime security reports.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, May 5, involving a verified hit by an unknown projectile on a cargo vessel.
French shipowner CMA CGM confirmed that crew members sustained injuries and the vessel was damaged, noting that the injured were evacuated for medical care. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), eight crew members were injured.
Polish Captain Confirmed Safe
Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka confirmed to Radio Gdańsk that the ship’s captain is Polish and is fortunately unharmed. The ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide assistance if required.

The attacked vessel, the San Antonio, flies the Maltese flag and was heading from the United Arab Emirates to India. According to Reuters, the ship was struck by an Iranian missile while passing near Oman, marking the 32nd such incident since the war began.
Project Freedom and Geopolitical Tensions
On May 3, Donald Trump announced “Project Freedom” to assist commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any disruption to humanitarian processes would be decisively addressed. Following Iranian attacks on other vessels, including a South Korean ship, U.S. forces reportedly shot down seven boats.
On Wednesday, May 6, the President announced that the initiative would be “paused for a short time” due to significant progress toward a final agreement with Iranian representatives.
