A car struck a young moose on Przyczółkowa Street in Wilanów, Warsaw, around 3:00 PM on March 19th, resulting in the animal’s death.
Moose-Vehicle Collision Details
A serious collision between a car and a moose occurred on Przyczółkowa Street in Wilanów. The young moose ran onto the road as a Honda was overtaking another vehicle.
The impact was forceful, throwing the moose into the air before it landed and ultimately died in a roadside ditch.
Circumstances of the Incident
The driver of the Honda was traveling from Konstancin-Jeziorna when the moose suddenly entered the roadway. The collision involved the rear and hind legs of the animal.
The moose attempted to move after the impact, dragging itself across the road and into the ditch.
Police Investigation and Roadside Warning
Police were called to the scene to document the incident, noting that it occurred approximately 200 meters before a wildlife warning sign. This proximity may be relevant in determining liability for vehicle damage.
Increased Wildlife Activity in Spring
Such incidents are more common in the spring as animals become more active after winter and begin searching for new feeding grounds.
Moose, in particular, leave their winter habitats – often located in wetlands and dense forests – in search of food.
Risks to Drivers and Vehicle Safety
Increased animal mobility leads to more frequent appearances near roads and onto roadways. The greatest risk of encounters occurs in the morning and evening.
Even at relatively low speeds, collisions with large animals like moose can cause significant vehicle damage and pose a direct threat to occupants.
