PiS Vice President Mateusz Morawiecki has publicly distanced himself from his party’s proposed cryptocurrency ban, advocating for balanced regulation over total prohibition to protect technological development and economic liquidity.
Opposition to Total Cryptocurrency Ban
In an interview with Radio ZET, PiS Vice President Mateusz Morawiecki stated that cryptocurrencies should not be banned in Poland. He explicitly distanced himself from a draft bill proposed by his own party that aims to prohibit crypto-assets, noting that he did not sign the proposal.
Morawiecki, the former Prime Minister, admitted he has not yet studied the full text of the bill but fundamentally disagrees with the direction of a total ban. He argued that the state should avoid shifting between extremes in its approach to the crypto-asset market.
The Role of Tokenization in the Economy
Morawiecki emphasized that tokenization is a crucial trend in the modern global economy. He stated that the state’s role should be to regulate the market rather than block technological progress, as tokenization increases liquidity and provides access to new financial instruments.
Critique of Internal Party Inconsistency
The former Prime Minister highlighted what he described as inconsistencies among some PiS politicians. He pointed out that members like Jacek Sasin and Janusz Kowalski were advocating for total deregulation just a few months ago, but have now pivoted toward supporting a total ban.
Morawiecki stressed that financial markets and the economy require predictability. He clarified that he is against both total deregulation and a total ban, seeking a “golden mean” that allows technology to serve Polish citizens through proper regulation.
Accusations Regarding Zondacrypto
During the discussion, Morawiecki attacked the current government over the Zondacrypto platform. He claimed that Prime Minister Donald Tusk failed to act despite knowing the platform was problematic, suggesting that the government should have added the company to a list of prohibited entities if it had information regarding Russian ties.
Morawiecki’s Position Within PiS
Despite his public opposition to the party’s project, Morawiecki stated he is not afraid of being expelled from PiS, asserting that his position is correct. While there have been months of speculation about his future in the party, particularly after he founded the Rozwój Plus association, he has reportedly reached an agreement with Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński.
The association is set to function within the party’s structures, which has temporarily calmed rumors of a potential split. However, media reports continue to highlight ongoing friction between various factions within Law and Justice.
