Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki discussed potential coalition strategies for PiS following next year’s parliamentary elections in Poznań on March 16th.
PiS Open to Coalition Talks
Mateusz Morawiecki stated he could envision various coalition discussions after the elections, referencing past conversations with representatives from PSL and Konfederacja in 2023.
He emphasized his approach of avoiding personal attacks on leaders of potential coalition partners, including Konfederacja, Partia Razem, PSL, and Polska 2050.
Morawiecki Assesses PiS’s Losses
Morawiecki believes the ability to compromise is crucial, stating that attacking political opponents can be detrimental. He pointed to the 2023 election results, where PiS won 40-41 more seats than the next party but lacked a coalition.
He explained his current strategy is to avoid burning bridges with other groups to maintain potential coalition options when needed.
Abortion Ruling Impacted PiS Support
Morawiecki identified the abortion ruling as a significant factor in PiS’s loss of power, noting a drop in support from 45% to 35% that never recovered.
He suggested that public opinion on the issue differed from the views of the most radical elements within the then-ruling PiS party.
Kaczyński’s Compromises on Candidates
Jarosław Kaczyński opted for Czarnka, a former education minister under Morawiecki, as a candidate, avoiding Tobiasz Bocheński or Patryk Jaki, whose candidacies would have been unacceptable to Morawiecki’s supporters.
The party researched Czarnka even before the presidential campaign, considering him as a potential presidential candidate.
