Morawiecki Launches Association, Drawing Fire from PiS

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has established a new association, prompting criticism from the ruling PiS party who allege a connection to Donald Tusk’s political maneuvering.

Morawiecki Announces New Association

In early April, Morawiecki confirmed reports of forming an association for individuals dissatisfied with existing right-wing parties—PiS, Konfederacja, and Korona Polska. A meeting between Morawiecki and PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński followed the announcement, reportedly to address internal party dynamics.

PiS Accuses Morawiecki of Aligning with Tusk

PiS officials claim Morawiecki’s association is part of “Tusk’s intrigues,” expressing concern about unity within the party. Spokesman Bochenek stated the initiative does not serve the party’s interests.

Restrictions on Party Members Joining Association

PiS asserts it will not prevent the creation of associations but objects to those based on current parliamentarians or party members, fearing disintegration. Bochenek argued the association aligns with attempts to undermine PiS by Tusk and his allies, advocating for unity behind candidate Przemysław Czarnak.

“Development Plus” – The Association’s Name and Goals

Morawiecki revealed the association’s name as “Development Plus,” describing it as ambitious and focused on Poland’s socio-economic development. The organization will function as a think tank, primarily addressing economic issues.

Internal Divisions Within PiS

Sources within PiS linked to Morawiecki indicate approximately 40 PiS MPs are involved in the association. They downplay the prospect of a split, despite concerns from party leadership.

Potential Exclusion from Electoral Lists

Reports suggest Kaczyński warned that PiS politicians joining Morawiecki’s association will be excluded from electoral lists. This claim was met with skepticism from Morawiecki’s allies, who pointed to potential implications for other associations within the party.

“Maślars” – The Opposition Within PiS

Critics of Morawiecki, dubbed “maślars” and associated with Czarnak, Jacek Sasin, and PiS vice-presidents Tobiasz Bochenek and Patryk Jaki, are accused of artificially raising concerns about the association. They allege it’s an attempt to broaden PiS’s electoral base.

Conflict and Factions Within PiS

Since late November, unofficial reports indicate a conflict within PiS between Morawiecki’s supporters (“harcerze”) and his opponents (“maślars”), as well as the faction of former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. Sources within PiS leadership initially suggested the association was formed in opposition to the party, eroding trust among members.
